It looks like imitation truly is the finest form of flattery!
Last month, sources claimed that the rock band was unhappy with similarities between “Midnight Memories” and their own 1987 track “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” which is known as one of their biggest hits.
However, guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell later came forward to deny the claims.
Campbell said in an interview with Billboard that it’s “very flattering that all of a sudden these kids think it’s a cool sound.”
Now, in an exclusive interview with TMZ, Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen echoed these feelings.
He said that while they see similarities, which is usually enough to make a strong case in court, the band does not feel they were ripped off at all, since the chord progression is not something new.
Taking legal action apparently never occurred to them said Allen, since if they were to take action against One Direction then “there would be a hundred other bands who would take action against [Def Leppard]” for the same reasons!
Allen feels that “Midnight Memories” is not a ripoff, but rather is the boys’ way of paying homage to Def Leppard and, he said: “It’s nice that their fans can see [where] they were influenced.”
In fact, he said: “We felt as if it was a huge compliment.”
Wow! Flattering some of the greatest rockers out there… Looks like Def Leppard seem to like them and that the boys have done good, what with this album’s more rock n’ roll sound and their rocker looks!
And it’s nice to know they’re officially out of hot water!
